The shown illustration represents the HOAC coin. It symbolizes the participation, accomplishments and the goals of the Hispanic Officers Advisory Committee. Uniform Services Units Coins are traditional instruments of meritorious recognition and camaraderie within corps throughout the decades. Thus, the HOAC commemorates with pride its continued important role thru its history of service when initially formed as Hispanic Officers Steering Committee (HOSteC) on September 1980.

The HOAC is inspired by contributions like John Guiteras, the first identified Hispanic PHS officer back on 1882, an expert in yellow fever who contain the epidemic in the Southern United States. The HOAC advices the Surgeon General on Public Health national matters addressing the growing Hispanic minority population as well on possible areas of improvement in matters of Hispanic health professional recruitment, retention, career development, and overall participation in the PHS.
